Electric Vehicles Going Kaboom !

Normal (?), Illinois

Watch this video. You’re looking at a parking lot filled with what I gather are new EV cars on a factory lot in Normal, Illinois, August 26, 2024.

The fire is from the Li-ion batteries. The popping and explosions you hear are from additional cars catching fire, with their Li-ion batteries exploding.

Textbook thermal runaway.

The plume of smoke is laced with hydrofluoric acid (HF), the most destructive acid known to science.

  1. Hmm, here’s a thought. Tell those nutcase liberals to stop burning Teslas and thereby destroying my environment.
All LI batteries carry the risk of fire and explosion. The blame is on consumers who overcharge them, and continuously “top them off” instead of allowing the batteries to discharge all their current and then recharging. That’s tough to do with an EV.

  2. THIS IS SCARY!

    Editor’s response: Very!

Look up the automobile company that is retrofitting these vehicles with Li-ion batteries. I get the impression they are beyond their depth with these notoriously temperamental batteries. On the other hand, even Elon Musk’s Teslas are exploding — and Musk is considered the leader in electric vehicles.

The problem is, Li-ion batteries on this scale are simply not suited for this task. In a smaller battery, such as in your cellphone or laptop, they appear to work fine, without exploding. Scaling a Li-ion battery up to “vehicle” size appears to be the problem. Somehow the laws of thermodynamics are being violated.
